Tesat-Spacecom

Tesat-Spacecom makes satellite communication equipment in Backnang, Germany, including payloads and laser communication terminals.

About Tesat-Spacecom

Tesat-Spacecom builds communication equipment for satellites. The company is based in Backnang, Germany. It makes the key parts that let satellites send and receive data. These include telecommunication payloads, which are the units on a satellite that carry the signals. It also builds laser communication terminals.

The site says about 1,100 employees work on a 63,000 square meter site in Backnang. They develop, assemble, join together and test products, systems and solutions. The company says nearly 1,000 space projects are complete. It also says more than half of all communication satellites in orbit carry Tesat equipment.

Laser, or optical, communication is a main focus. The site says Tesat was the first organization to develop and deliver equipment for optical broadband links in space. It names the benefits as a high data rate, secure transmission and stability. The company says its laser links have carried a very large number of transmissions.

Recent news shows the product range. Tesat delivered its first SCOT135 optical terminal. It launched a SCOT20 terminal on the Planetek Hellas OptiSat mission, part of Greece's national satellite program. It also delivered SCOT80 terminals for a Lockheed Martin GPS demonstration.

An affiliate, Tesat Government, serves the US security-restricted market. In December 2025 it partnered with Frontgrade Technologies to make key parts of its US optical communication terminals.

The company links its work to daily life. It says satellites help people make calls, watch television, get internet in remote areas and find their way. They also support earth observation for climate, disaster prevention, security and farming. The site says Tesat works with universities and supports science projects such as the James Webb telescope.

The company also states values of open talk, integrity and setting an example. It says it cares about the environment from product design to production. The website carries news, career pages and directions to the Backnang site. In March 2025 it opened its doors for the German national Space Day. Visitors saw current space projects and joined hands-on experiments.
