About Specialized Aero

Specialized Aero Works is a flight school in Bend, Oregon. It is based at the Red Hangar at 63120 Powell Butte Road. The company teaches advanced skills, and the site description says it also does aircraft maintenance. It is known by the short name SAW.

Its training list includes upset prevention and recovery, aerobatics, emergency maneuvering, a CFI spin endorsement, formation flying, tailwheel and flight testing. The company also sells aerobatic adventure flights and gift certificates. Its stated mission is to cut loss of control in flight accidents and to make pilots better at stick and rudder flying and decision making.

The site says its upset recovery courses follow the current Airplane Upset Recovery Training Aid, Revision 3. It also says it is one of few companies with FAA Part 141 certified upset recovery and spin courses. SAW is a founding member of the Upset Prevention and Recovery Training Network, which sets standards for general aviation providers.

The instructors come from many backgrounds. They include military pilots, test pilots, backcountry pilots, air ambulance pilots and designated pilot examiners. The site says all instructors have upset recovery training and must work toward Master CFI or Master CFI Aerobatic status.

Two aircraft are described. The ACA Super Decathlon is a 2005 model with 180 horsepower and an inverted oil system, rated for plus 6 and minus 5 G. The Wilga 2000 is a rare Polish aircraft, and the site says it is the only company offering Wilga flights in the United States. The phone number is (541) 728-3620, and the site has a contact form and a shop.
