Southern hemisphere ground stations at Awarua and Warkworth
About Space Operations New Zealand
Space Operations New Zealand (SpaceOps NZ) provides integrated ground segment services from New Zealand, supporting LEO, MEO, GEO, lunar and deep-space missions through two complementary sites: the Awarua Satellite Ground Station near Invercargill and the Warkworth Space Centre near Auckland. Headquartered at Hargest House, 62 Deveron Street, Invercargill, it is wholly owned by Great South, the Southland regional development agency, and is an engineering-led organisation of professional engineers and technicians who work directly with customer mission teams. Its chief executive Robin has designed and built ground stations in Antarctica, Tokelau and Southland, and its board includes 4RF founder John Yaldwyn as chief technology officer.
Sites
- Awarua Satellite Ground Station: the flagship southern hemisphere site, optimised for high-availability LEO, MEO and GEO mission operations and constellation support, with an extremely low horizon mask, a low-interference RF environment, antenna hosting and infrastructure services, and UHF, S/X and Ka-band antenna leasing; the site is expanding with a satellite uplink centre as part of the SouthPAN trans-Tasman project to enhance satellite positioning services across New Zealand and Australia
- Warkworth Space Centre: deep-space and lunar mission support with large-aperture antennas, including a 30 m X-band and a 12 m S/X-band system, plus radio astronomy and space geodesy operations
Services
SpaceOps NZ offers antenna hosting from site planning through installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance with local engineering, rigging and IT specialists; antenna leasing for TT and C and payload communications including UHF bistatic options for smallsats, S/X-band and Ka-band; launch and early operations phase (LEOP) support, commissioning, contingency and emergency spacecraft support that benefit from New Zealand's time zone and southern hemisphere geometry; RF licensing; and engineering and integration services. Customers share mission type, orbit, frequency bands, link budgets, timelines and data delivery preferences, and the company proposes a hosting, leasing or operations approach. Its engineers also present at technical events such as PyCon.
