Space Dynamics Laboratory
University Affiliated Research Center for space and defence
About Space Dynamics Laboratory
Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is a nonprofit research corporation wholly owned by Utah State University and one of the six original University Affiliated Research Centers designated in 1996. It is sponsored by the US Space Force through the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration, and has delivered missions for national security and scientific discovery since 1959.
Mission focus
- Multi-domain defence: advanced solutions that protect national security across all domains
- Science and space exploration: engineering solutions for ongoing science and space challenges
Capabilities
SDL's work is organised around satellites, sensors and instruments, ground and data systems, and autonomous systems. Its eleven UARC core competencies fall into five focus areas: advanced sensing and systems; autonomous systems and intelligent control; space mission design and operations; integrated command, control, data and cyber systems; and modelling, simulation and analysis. The laboratory also operates facilities for building and testing space hardware.
How SDL works
As a trusted government partner, SDL aligns its core competencies with the US Space Force and the Department of War and collaborates with government, other UARCs, federally funded research and development centres, academia, industry and commercial partners. It invests in its technical workforce, infrastructure and facilities, and provides technical expertise that can be transitioned rapidly to operational environments, granting unlimited rights to its government partners. SDL also publishes patents and media on its programmes of national importance and recruits engineers and scientists through its careers pages.
