About SMR Technologies Ice Shield De-Icing Systems

SMR Technologies makes Ice Shield de-icing products for general, commuter and charter aircraft. The company is based in Fenwick, West Virginia.

The product range includes pneumatic wing boot de-icers and electro-thermal propeller boot de-icers. It also includes engine inlet de-icers, wire harnesses, front edge assemblies for the TBM, de-ice hardware, accessories and retrofit kits. The company says all Ice Shield products are approved by the FAA, and papers are available on request.

Ice Shield first appeared in 1998 on the Piper Navajo, after B/E Aerospace bought the former BFGoodrich plant. The company says it gave owners a second choice in a market that had only one. Over the years it added more aircraft, including the DHC-6 Twin Otter in 2006 and the Cessna Citation series in 2011. It also lists retrofit kits for the Piper Saratoga and the Beechcraft Bonanza, and Dash 8 approval for the DHC-100, 200, 300 and Q400 in 2016. The Loar Group bought the SMR Technologies assets in 2019.

Today Ice Shield is available for more than 75 aircraft models. The company says this covers 85 percent of the general aviation aircraft flying now. It has also added products for the Bombardier DHC-8 family, the Saab 340, the Beech 1900 and the Embraer 120. Ice Shield is the original equipment brand for Beechcraft, Epic, Lancair, Viking and Vulcanair.

The boots are made to swap part for part with original equipment, so an operator can change one boot without replacing a full set. A newer wing boot version uses a pressure sensitive adhesive, which is meant to save time on installation. The company says its engineers have more than 25 years of experience. They use wind tunnel testing and LEWICE analysis software.

A network of distributors and certified installers serves customers worldwide. The company says distributors hold stock, and the factory can drop ship a part if needed. All parts come with a warranty that offers a new product when the old boot is returned. The company offers search by aircraft or part number, support manuals and a list of common questions.
