OCCAM Space

OCCAM Space, SL designs and manufactures separation and release systems for critical operations in space, from CubeSats to large orbital systems. The company is based at Calle de los Llanos de Jerez 19 in Coslada, Madrid, Spain, takes part in the ESA Business Incubation Centre Madrid Region and is supported by ICEX Next and the European FEDER fund for its international development. Its name and engineering philosophy come from Occam's razor: fewer parts, cleaner interfaces and simpler architectures that reduce risk, cost and integration effort.

• KISS clampband separation systems in standard sizes, including the 24-inch KISS-24 that flew for D-Orbit on SpaceX's Transporter-17 rideshare mission, and larger 937, 1194 and 1575 mm interfaces or tailored sizes
• Grip structural test models of each KISS size for ground assembly, integration, test and transport
• Hold-down and release actuators for CubeSats and PicoSats, with a 1 kN maximum operational preload in an auto-resettable 25 by 40 by 6 mm unit
• Non-explosive separation nuts from M6 to M22 interfaces with 5 to 200 kN maximum operational preload, quickly resettable by the customer without refurbishment
• Interface separation rings and payload adapters: standard and customised monolithic aluminium adapters from small to very large sizes
• Multi-payload deployment systems for mini-launcher rideshare and constellation deployment, and custom separation systems built to mission needs

Approach

OCCAM Space's team has decades of experience designing complex aerospace mechanisms and now applies it to streamlined systems with homogeneous preload, quick resettability and quick integration. The company states that its minimalist approach lowers production effort and cost without compromising performance, and that resettable, robust designs support reuse and sustainable space missions.
