National Warplane Museum
Living aviation museum with flying warbirds
About National Warplane Museum
The National Warplane Museum is a non-profit living aviation museum in Geneseo, New York, in the United States. Its website says the museum is dedicated to restoring, flying, displaying and preserving historic military aircraft and artifacts, to honoring veterans, and to teaching the public about aviation and military history. It describes a hands-on, no barriers approach, and its motto is to keep history flying. Its airfield is all grass, and it is run by volunteers and supported by donors.
History
The museum traces its roots to the early 1980s, when a small group of warbird enthusiasts began gathering vintage military aircraft on Geneseo's grass runways. Its B-17 bomber gatherings of the early 1990s drew national attention, and the airshow grew into what is now called The Greatest Show on Turf. The museum was later incorporated as a non-profit organization.
Collection
- C-47A Whiskey 7, which the museum says led the second wave of paratrooper drops on D-Day and is a fully restored, operational aircraft; it flew across the Atlantic for the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy
- The Antonov An-2R Colt, one of the museum's earliest aircraft
- The rare Douglas B-23 Dragon
- A fleet of restored World War II era military vehicles
The museum says most of its collection is available for scheduled rides and training, and that visitors can book rides on its authentic World War II aircraft.
Programs and events
The museum runs Living History Days, monthly Hangar Talks, school outreach and youth STEM programs, a Flying Objects kids day, and big band and swing concerts held among the historic warbirds in the hangars. Its 2026 airshow weekend took place on 11 and 12 July. Veterans take part in events, restoration work and public programs, and share their experiences with visitors. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 3 PM, in spring and summer.
