About Erik Edgren Airshows

Erik Edgren Airshows is a US airshow performance business offering aerobatic, comedy, deadstick and night acts flown in a clipped-wing 1939 Taylorcraft known as the T-Clips. Erik Edgren is a full-time airshow performer and semi-retired farmer who began flying on his father's lap at the age of six, was ready to solo at eight using a tailor-made seat and control extensions, and learned spins at ten. He has worked as a flight instructor, as an instructor pilot for an air combat school flying the AT-6/SNJ and as a corporate pilot on Learjets and King Airs, and has flown more than 6,000 hours in over 180 makes and models of aircraft. His comedy character is Hobie Washburn, a parrot-head persona who is a crowd favourite at shows that request him.

Acts

  • Comedy and aerobatics: a wild take-off, the world's first and only inverted comedy pass, and a mid-act reveal as Hobie's antics turn into full inside-outside, gyroscopic, energy-management aerobatics; ground banter can be lengthened, shortened or dropped to suit the show
  • Aerobatics only: a roll to inverted on take-off, an inverted climb-out and a full routine of gyroscopic and finesse manoeuvres
  • Deadstick: power-off loops, cloverleafs, Cuban eights, point rolls and inverted flight, often ending with a deadstick roll to landing described as an industry first; both a power-on act and the deadstick act can be flown on the same show day
  • Twilight and Lit Up night act, introduced in autumn 2023, with 14 AeroLED lights and four colour-changing light strips synchronised to the performance, plus formation and squirrel cage acts with selected performers at some venues

Aircraft

The T-Clips was built by Taylorcraft in 1939 and clipped for aerobatics in 1997 by Steve Givens using a mix of the Swick and Cole plans; Erik added inverted fuel and oil systems and airshow smoke. It carries a Catto 74/46 custom fixed-pitch propeller, Precision Airmotive fuel injection, Tempest spark plugs and fuel pump, SkyTec starter, EarthX battery, CJ Aviation smoke pump, Oregon Aero seat cushions and AeroLED night lighting, with an engine custom built by Legacy Aviation; the aircraft uses about three gallons of fuel to climb to 6,000 feet. Recent and past bookings listed on the schedule include Battle Creek Field of Flight, Wings Over Wausau, Duluth Air and Aviation Expo, Westmoreland County Airshow, Chippewa Valley Airshow, Thunder Over Dalhart, Liberal AirFair and Wings and Wheels in Chickasha. Sponsors include Catto Propellers, Tanis, CamGuard, Tempest, Precision Airmotive, AeroLED, Oregon Aero, Clarity Aloft and SiriusXM Aviation.
