Mid-State Aerospace
Precision machining for military and commercial aerospace
About Mid-State Aerospace
Mid-State Aerospace, which trades as Midstate Machine, is a precision machining company in the United States with sites in Maine, Ohio and Arizona. It makes parts for military and commercial aerospace. Its work runs from supply chain management to mechanical manufacturing.
Midstate offers end-to-end manufacturing. It uses lean methods to cut steps, waste and the time it takes to finish a job. The company runs more than 41 multi-axis CNC machining centers. These handle complex parts from 1 inch to 140 inches, from hog outs to near net castings. It can machine and inspect assemblies of up to 30 tons.
The shop works with aluminum, magnesium, titanium and Inconel. Its services include five-axis high-speed milling, multi-axis turning, EDM, grinding, fabrication, assembly, testing and inspection. It also runs special processes such as anodizing, plating, etching, heat treat, brazing, wire EDM, laser welding and drilling, prime paint, robotic shot peening, passivation and salt spray testing. Active probe systems check parts, fixtures and tool length. This helps raise first-time yield and cut cycle time.
Midstate manages the full supply chain for a customer order. That includes X-ray, EDM, cladding, laser welding and submerged arc welding. The company says it is NADCAP certified for welding and nondestructive testing. Its machine floor includes equipment from DMG, Makino, Doosan, Mori Seiki, Chmer and Mitsubishi.
On the military side, Midstate works on the F-18, F-35, Sikorsky CH-53, Apache AH-64, Black Hawk UH-60 and V-22 Osprey. It is a key supplier to the Lockheed Martin F-35 program. It makes key rotating part hardware for the F135 engine that powers the F-35. For commercial customers, it supports the Airbus A320 and makes Honeywell-supplied APU and power management components.
The company lists many aircraft components in its skill set. For rotary aircraft, these include bifilers, engine supports, engine housing manifolds, fuel control parts and bearing supports. For fixed-wing aircraft, they include engine housings and nacelle hinges. It also machines turbine and compressor rotor components. Beyond aerospace, Midstate serves defense, power generation, and oil and gas customers.
