Mersen
Graphite, silicon carbide and electrical protection for aerospace propulsion and power
About Mersen
Mersen is a French global industrial group specialising in electrical power and advanced materials, with more than 50 industrial sites in 30 countries and sales of almost EUR 1.2 billion in 2025. Its roots go back to carbon arc rods and carbon brushes in the 1870s and the 1937 merger of Le Carbone and the Compagnie Lorraine de Charbons, founded by Maurice Lacombe and Fabius Henrion, into the Carbone Lorraine group. Mersen designs and deploys technologies for the energy and industrial transitions, from power management, electric vehicles and renewable energy to aerospace and rail, and in the United States employs around 1,300 people at 16 industrial sites.
Aerospace
- Advanced materials including graphite, sintered silicon carbide (SSiC) and carbon/carbon composites engineered for weight savings and high-temperature resilience, such as graphite bearings and shaft seals for propulsion systems
- Power electronics components for less carbon-intensive aviation: fuses and electrical protection, busbars, power capacitors and thermal management for power distribution and electronic control units in more electric and hybrid aircraft
- Complex technical components built to withstand extreme environments and strict aerospace safety standards, with an aerospace division and coordinate measuring inspection at Mersen Bay City, Michigan
Other activities
- Electrical protection and control, surge protection, DC protection for EVs and batteries, cooling solutions and power stack design optimisation, supported by the FUSE-ion configurator and R-TOOLS MAXX heat sink selector
- Current transfer and electrical carbon, including wind generator maintenance, and isostatic and extruded graphite for high-temperature solutions, insulation and anticorrosion equipment such as graphite heat exchangers with US service centres
- Battery energy storage, solar and wind power, electronics and rail applications
In the United States
Mersen's American presence dates from 1907, with Le Carbone Co. Inc. established in 1936 at Boonton, New Jersey, still a major group site, followed by acquisitions including Bay City (1990), Stackpole (1991), Gould Shawmut (1999) and, in 2024, Graphite Machining, Inc., an expert in purification and machining of graphite and carbon composites. Most sites hold ISO 14001, ISO 45001 or ISO 50001 management certifications, and the group was selected by GE Vernova for power grid stability work and holds international Living Wage certification.
