Kinéis
French satellite IoT constellation operator built on the ARGOS heritage

About Kinéis
Kinéis is a French satellite operator and global connectivity provider for the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Automatic Identification System (AIS), based at the Parc Technologique du Canal in Ramonville-Saint-Agne near Toulouse. Founded in 2018 by CLS and the French space agency CNES to take over operation of the ARGOS system, it guarantees the transmission of data from connected objects anywhere in the world through a constellation of 25 nanosatellites, described as the first European constellation dedicated to the IoT, and aims to connect two million devices across the globe.
Heritage
- Builds on 40 years of expertise in collecting data from space: the ARGOS system began in 1978 as a French-American cooperation between CNES and NOAA with NASA support
- CLS (Collecte Localisation Satellites) was created by CNES in 1986 to operate, maintain and commercialise ARGOS; Eumetsat joined the operations committee in 2006, later followed by ISRO
- Kinéis raised 100 million euros in 2020 alongside its main shareholders CLS and CNES, with a public-private capital structure that includes space industrialists working on the constellation and financial partners, and has been listed in French Tech Next40 (2021 and 2022) and French Tech 120 (2023)
- The constellation was built by a 100 percent French ecosystem of partners
Services
- IoT to Track: locating assets 24/7 anywhere in the world, since only about 15 percent of the globe is covered by terrestrial networks, for rail, maritime and freight transport, container tracking, fleet management, leisure boating and agriculture
- IoT to Monitor: near real-time collection of data from remote sites, such as animal monitoring, inspection of electricity pylons, water infrastructure leak detection and alerts, and early detection of forest fires
- AIS vessel data and personalised support for clients and partners integrating the technology
