About Kaman Air Vehicles
Kaman Air Vehicles, known as KAV, is a rotorcraft company based in Bloomfield, Connecticut. It brings decades of OEM manufacturing heritage to rotorcraft support, maintenance, repair and overhaul. It supports commercial and military operators worldwide.
The company traces its roots to Charles H. Kaman, who founded Kaman Aircraft Company in 1945 in West Hartford, Connecticut. Firsts from that heritage include the first gas turbine powered helicopter in 1951, the first twin turbine helicopter in 1954, the first remotely piloted helicopter in 1957, and the first all composite rotor blade in the 1960s.
The K-MAX is a heavy lift helicopter. It received FAA certification in 1994 as the first helicopter designed for repetitive heavy lift operations. The SH-2G Super Seasprite is an all weather, multi mission maritime helicopter. It entered U.S. Navy service in 1993.
The company specializes in rotor blades, transmissions, dynamic components and critical rotorcraft systems. Its repair and overhaul work covers landing gear, spindles, rotor shafts, azimuths and actuators. It also offers wire harness design and installation.
Testing is a major part of the work. The Bloomfield facility has a blade whirl rig test stand. It offers non destructive inspection with Level III ultrasonic testing, digital X-ray and tap testing. It also offers environmental testing and gearbox testing for rotor systems.
The company provides integrated logistic support. It offers technical documentation, reliability centered maintenance, level of repair analysis, performance based logistics and obsolescence analysis reporting. These services help keep smaller and unique fleets supportable.
Kaman holds FAA Part 145 repair station status, along with AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certification from BSI. Its facilities include an ISO 14644-1 Class 8 clean room, four autoclaves, and water jet and five axis CNC machines. The Customer Service Center in Bloomfield provides K-MAX training and support.
