Ienai Space
ATHENA electrospray thrusters and mobility software for small satellites

About Ienai Space
IENAI Space is a Spanish company that builds space mobility hardware and software for the next generation of small satellites, with the tagline Setting Space in Motion. Its name comes from the Greek root of the word ion, coined by Michael Faraday in 1834, and the company's mission is to supply tailored, end-to-end mobility products and services for a sustainable new space economy across civil, commercial and defence missions. It works with Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and has partnered with ISPTech to develop dual-mode propulsion.
ATHENA electric propulsion
ATHENA is a family of highly compact electric propulsion systems based on IENAI's proprietary electrospray technology, described as the world's most compact on-board electric thrusters. It comes in PICO and NANO models with a MICRO version in development, to suit different mission profiles and satellite sizes, and supports orbit correction, life extension, deorbiting, constellation deployment and collision avoidance. ATHENA NANO completed a 600-hour ground test on the road to critical design review, was integrated on FOSSA Systems' first 6U satellite, and reached orbit on Isar Aerospace's Spectrum 2 launch.
Software
- 360: a SaaS mission and space mobility analysis tool with high-fidelity flight dynamics, attitude dynamics, spacecraft and subsystem digital twins, operations planning and an optimisation and design layer, usable from a Python IDE or through the no-code 360-Studio web tool
- ORBITAL: a scheduling and optimisation platform that simulates, optimises and automates spacecraft manoeuvres, from collision avoidance and rendezvous to formation flying and constellation deployment, and fits into existing operations workflows
IENAI also publishes a mission analysis formulary for students and professionals.
Team
The company was co-founded by its chief executive, whose career has focused on building large rockets, and its chief operating officer. The team describes orbital mobility as being as important in space as transport has been on Earth, with a vision of thousands of spacecraft moving goods, people and data in orbit.
