Icom America

Icom America, Inc. is the United States subsidiary of Icom Inc., the Osaka, Japan maker of wireless communication equipment, and is based in Kirkland, Washington. Its product divisions cover amateur radio, aviation, land mobile, marine, network and systems products, including the handheld and panel mount airband transceivers that pilots carry as a backup radio or use in aircraft without a panel radio.

Company background

Icom's founder Tokuzo Inoue started Inoue Electric Seisakusho in 1954 in a small workshop and established Icom in 1964. The company has kept all of its production in Japan; its Wakayama plant runs a system for small volume, multi-model wireless products, and radios are tested in-house and to US Military Standard 810 environmental tests. Icom America was followed by subsidiaries in Germany, Spain, Australia, Canada, Brazil, China and Vietnam. The group publishes quality and environmental policies and green procurement standards, first issued in 2005.

Aviation products

The aviation line includes handheld VHF airband transceivers with navigation functions, panel mount aviation radios for light aircraft, ground station radios for FBOs and flight schools, and accessories such as batteries, chargers, headset adapters and antennas. The site has a dedicated support portal for technical questions and a contact form routed to customer service, inside sales, the repair and warranty centre, replacement parts and technical support.

Quality and production

Icom publishes a quality policy under ISO 9001 and an environmental policy, and its green procurement standards set requirements for parts and materials suppliers in line with international standards such as IEC 62474. The company presents its decision to keep manufacturing in Japan as the basis for its reputation for reliability, and Icom America handles US sales, warranty and repair through its Kirkland office, with Icom Canada and Icom Brazil covering the rest of the Americas.
