About GIFAS

GIFAS, the Groupement des Industries Françaises Aéronautiques et Spatiales, is the French Aerospace Industries Association, the body that represents the French aerospace sector to national, European and international public and private organisations. It counts more than 500 member companies, from prime contractors and equipment manufacturers to SMEs, which together employ 188,000 people in their aerospace activities in France, and it promotes structure, coherence and solidarity across the industry while supporting each member.

History

  • Traces its origins to 11 January 1908, when pioneers including Robert Esnault-Pelterie, Louis Blériot, Louis Breguet and Gabriel Voisin, who had left the automotive industry to pursue heavier-than-air flight after the Wright brothers' first flights, met at the Automobile Club de France to organise the new industry
  • For more than 110 years the association has rallied the industry around organising, cooperating and innovating to create, develop and promote French aerospace

Organisation

  • A board of administrators made up of business leaders from the main member companies, from which the chairman is elected, and a permanent staff of around forty people under a chief executive
  • The GEAD group for aerospace and defence equipment manufacturers, an Aero-PME committee for SME members that partner with primes on all aerospace programmes, and dedicated commissions and committees led by representatives of member companies
  • Five international offices in Montreal (NAFAN and France ICAO), Dubai (MEFAN), Washington DC and New Delhi (INFAN), each coordinating a regional network open to members established in or entering the area, in partnership with Business France

Activities

  • Industry programmes to strengthen the supply chain and competitiveness, including secure digital tools such as those offered by BoostAeroSpace to integrate members into one ecosystem
  • The GIFAS Observatory, which studies the sector's challenges in competitiveness, employment and training, environment, innovation and internationalisation, and publishes an annual report and brochures
  • The Paris Air Show at Le Bourget, organised every two years by SIAE, a GIFAS subsidiary, and described as the largest event in the world dedicated to aerospace, with the Paris Air Lab area on research topics such as climate change, artificial intelligence and the future of mobility
  • A searchable member directory by company, head office and activity, news and press releases, and partner bodies shown on the site including SIAE, CORAC, Cospace, Airemploi, Hanvol and ASD
