About Diffraction

Diffraction Limited designs and manufactures advanced imaging systems for space domain awareness, astronomy, scientific and OEM applications. Based at 5-33 Roydon Place in Ottawa, Ontario, the company specialises in high-sensitivity, low-noise imaging, precision instrumentation and custom imaging platforms, combining expertise in optics, electronics, FPGA design, firmware, software, thermal management and sensor integration. For more than 30 years its technologies have been used in research laboratories, observatories, aerospace projects, industrial systems and scientific instrumentation worldwide, and all products and OEM systems are engineered, assembled and tested at its ISO 9001-certified Ottawa facility.

Products

  • SBIG Aluma AC455: a research-grade camera with a 62 megapixel science-grade CMOS sensor, powerful cooling and 10 Gb Ethernet for fast downloads over long cable runs, aimed at dark-sky observatories and college campuses
  • Aluma AC461: a 102 megapixel science-grade CMOS camera with a 44 x 33 mm image area and extremely low-noise readout, suited to larger telescopes
  • Aluma CCD47-10: a back-illuminated CCD camera in a compact package with powerful cooling
  • Multiple camera synchronisation, from individual scientific cameras to highly synchronised thousand-camera telescope arrays, and a range of accessories
  • Software including MaxIm DL, a comprehensive astronomical imaging platform, MaxPoint, camera firmware, device drivers and applications for image acquisition, control, automation and processing

OEM and custom imaging

A major focus is partnering with OEM customers and technical organisations that need imaging capabilities beyond off-the-shelf products, supporting projects from prototype through production with custom electronics, embedded systems, high-speed data acquisition, thermal design and scientific-grade camera integration. The engineering-driven company works closely with customer technical teams in applications including space domain awareness, astronomy, biomedical and laboratory imaging and industrial systems, and publishes technical articles on CMOS versus CCD sensors, pixel size and scientific camera performance.
