Civilian auxiliary of the US Air Force: emergency services, aerospace education and cadets

About Civil Air Patrol

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is the civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force, a congressionally chartered, federally funded 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation headquartered at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. Founded on 1 December 1941 to mobilise the nation's civilian aviation resources for national defence, it has evolved into a public service organisation and a cost-effective force multiplier supporting Air Force-assigned missions nationwide. It operates in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia, and its aviation-connected volunteer professionals come from a wide range of backgrounds united by service, leadership and commitment to community.

Three missions

  • Emergency services: members fly and support search and rescue, disaster response, aerial reconnaissance, communications support, homeland security operations and humanitarian missions for local, state and federal agencies, coordinated through a National Operations Center and trained at the National Emergency Services Academy
  • Aerospace education: an award-winning programme promoting aerospace, aviation and STEM careers through curriculum, flight experiences and hands-on activities for young people and educators, including Aerospace Connections in Education, STEM kits, model rocketry, teacher orientation flights, the Kittinger High-Altitude Balloon Challenge and CAP/NASA Aviation Skywatch and Aurora Watch missions
  • Cadet programmes: leadership development for young people through encampments, national cadet special activities, a National Cadet Advisory Council, scholarships, flight training assistance and recommendations for the US Air Force Academy Preparatory School

Operations and training

CAP's website supports its pilots with qualification and endorsement guidance, standardisation and evaluation newsletters, a NOTAM management system, the Web Mission Information and Reporting System and small UAS training content, as well as counterdrug orientation courses and operations evaluations. Members also take part in the Air and Space Forces Association's CyberPatriot and StellarXplorers programmes, and regions and wings publish news and hold conferences. National headquarters is at Maxwell AFB, AL 36112.
