Bionic Composite Technologies
Fibre-optimised carbon composite parts by Tailored Fiber Placement

About Bionic Composite Technologies
BIONTEC (Bionic Composite Technologies AG) is a Swiss composite manufacturer in St. Gallen that develops and produces load-path-optimised carbon fibre components using Tailored Fiber Placement (TFP) and Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), from prototypes to industrial series production. Part of the Forster Group, the company grew out of the St. Gallen region's embroidery industry: in 2009 the idea emerged of using embroidery technology to place technical fibres such as carbon precisely rather than textile threads, and BIONTEC was founded to combine more than 120 years of embroidery heritage with modern fibre placement.
Technology
- Tailored Fiber Placement, in which textile embroidery machines lay carbon fibres in digitally controlled patterns aligned to the actual load paths of a component, so material is used only where needed and weight is kept to a minimum; the fibre layups are then processed into preforms
- Resin Transfer Molding, injecting a thermoset resin matrix into the fibre preforms and consolidating under pressure, and Hot Compression Molding, consolidating thermoplastic fibre preforms under heat and pressure
- Carbon fibre reinforced plastics as the main material class, with glass fibre reinforced plastics also offered, giving high specific stiffness, minimal thermal expansion and good dynamic behaviour
- TFP is described as producing material waste under 2 percent, making composite manufacturing more sustainable
Services and quality
- End-to-end support from component design and tool development to prototypes and scalable series production, with engineers analysing loads, environments and volumes to find technically robust and economically viable solutions
- Automated, reproducible production from a single source, with integrated tests, monitoring and statistical analyses documenting stability across small and large series
- ISO 9001 and EN 9100 certified quality management, non-destructive testing and complete traceability
- Feasibility checks and technical advice on materials and processes, with a typical response within one to two business days
Company
BIONTEC positions itself for high-performance applications where standard composites do not fit complex load paths, conventional composite manufacturing is hard to scale and metal parts are too heavy, combining Swiss engineering with global manufacturing. Logos on its site include Swiss ASD, the Swiss aerospace and defence industries group, and the local chamber of commerce IHK.
