Astranis
Small geostationary satellites for sovereign connectivity
About Astranis
Astranis designs, builds and operates small geostationary satellites for high orbits. The company says it created a new class of satellite. Its satellites are designed, built and tested in San Francisco, at its headquarters at Historic Pier 70 in California.
The company says five GEO satellites are in orbit today, with more launching soon. It has more than 10 satellites on contract for customers around the world, representing more than $1 billion of satellite services sold.
Its first product, MicroGEO, offers dedicated satellite broadband. The site lists several satellite families, including Prime, UtilitySat, Omega, Nexus and Perceptor. UtilitySat is described as a multi mission commercial GEO satellite for Ka, Ku and Q/V bands. Nexus is a next generation GPS satellite that the Space Force selected Astranis to design. Perceptor is a space domain awareness product.
Customers include stc group, which will receive dedicated satellite capacity across Saudi Arabia in 2027. Thaicom selected Astranis to build and operate THAICOM-9. Chunghwa Telecom signed to launch Taiwan's first dedicated satellite. Anuvu has satellites online as a private GEO network.
The company works with government partners, including the US Space Force and NASA. It was tapped as prime contractor for the Space Force's Protected Tactical SATCOM Global program. It also has a contract for a US government mission.
Its satellites use an onboard propulsion system and a software defined radio. The radio reallocates bandwidth and power across 7 GHz of simultaneous bandwidth. The company says its radiation hardened hardware has weathered several solar storms in space.
The first MicroGEO satellite, Arcturus, launched in 2023. Three more Prime satellites have launched, and six additional Prime satellites have been sold. The company builds its satellites in house, including manufacturing, machining and testing.
The company says its satellites are made to last. Its facility at Pier 70 once built warships during the World Wars.
