About AK Steel International

AK Steel International B.V. is a specialty steel marketing company based in Breda, in the Netherlands. It sells steel mill products such as ARMCO Pure Iron, aluminium-coated carbon and stainless steels, and chromium alloyed steels for car exhaust systems. The company has worked in steel since 1924.

Its product range has three main groups. ARMCO Pure Iron is a very pure iron that was first developed in 1909, with an iron content of more than 99.85 per cent. ARMCO Telar 57 is a non-ageing soft magnetic variant developed in 1957 for the electrical industry. The company also sells stainless sheet and strip, including ferritic grades and PH grades, and stainless bar and wire, including NITRONIC grades. It keeps a stock program for stainless sheet, strip and bar.

The company says pure iron resists corrosion, oxidation and chemical attack better than mild steel. It also has good electrical and magnetic properties, cold working properties and weldability. Uses include remelting, electromagnetic components, electrical parts, magnetic shielding for MRI scanners, galvanizing tanks and equipment, anti-corrosion anodes, welding wire and metal gaskets. Craft users make gates, railings and jewellery parts from it.

AK Steel International serves several markets. These are automotive, aerospace, defence and marine, energy, oil, gas and chemical, high energy physics and big science, food, measurement technology and automation, and medical.

Offices are in Breda in the Netherlands, Stevenage in the United Kingdom, Cologne in Germany, Puteaux in France, Genoa in Italy and Barcelona in Spain. The company's top priorities are product quality, reliability of supply and solid technical support in application and manufacturing.

The company's roots go back to the American Rolling Mill Company, known as ARMCO, which was founded in 1899 in Middletown, Ohio. Its European subsidiaries began to work together in 1986 under the name ARMCO Specialty Steels Europe. ARMCO merged with AK Steel in 1999, and the European companies took the AK Steel name in 2000. They became AK Steel International in 2004.

AK Steel International is a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., which is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland-Cliffs acquired AK Steel in 2020.
