Aerospace Fabrication and Materials, LLC (AFM) designs, manufactures and installs multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets and associated passive thermal control parts for aerospace and cryogenic applications. Established in 1999 and based at 5147 208th Street West in Farmington, Minnesota, the company was formed to supply quality MLI blankets to the aerospace community, and its principals are specialists in thin film material technology with backgrounds in vacuum deposition. Over more than 25 years AFM has worked with clients on big science, optical telescope and International Space Station projects, and says it has products orbiting or in place on several bodies in the solar system.

Products

• Multilayer insulation blankets and passive thermal control components for satellites and rockets, including sun shields and micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) shields, protecting instruments from the vacuum of space and the heat of re-entry
• Cryogenic superinsulation for applications from small pipelines to large storage tanks
• Thermal control subassemblies and insulation materials for customers who build their own finished products
• Custom industrial soft goods, including inflatables, acoustic panels and display pieces, built on the company's core capabilities in sewing, taping and sealing

Services

AFM offers engineering support and build-to-print manufacturing, cryogenic testing, high-temperature bakeout and precision cleaning services to complement its thermal control products. Its approach is to listen to the customer's needs, evaluate the conditions the components must survive and develop a solution for mission success, from rockets and spacecraft components to cryogenic systems.
