About AELO Swiss Academy

AELO Swiss Academy is a flight school at Locarno Airport in southern Switzerland. It trains airline pilots and was established in 1985. The school is certified by the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation as an Approved Training Organisation, with number CH.ATO.0311, and its licences are recognised across EASA member states.

The main course is the ATPL Integrated Programme. It takes students with little or no flying experience to an EASA commercial pilot licence with a multi-engine instrument rating in 18 months. Multi crew cooperation training comes at the end. Students with an EASA private licence can receive credit for hours already flown.

Other programmes link students to airlines. In the SkyAlps MPL Programme, students train for 18 months on the Dash 8 Q400 and then join SkyAlps, a regional airline in Bolzano, Italy, as First Officers. The NEOS PreSelect Programme adds a path into the recruitment process of NEOS Airlines and needs a special request. The Amris Mentored Programme adds mentoring and a personal assessment. The school also offers ATPL transfers, private pilot licence courses, instructor ratings, SPHAIR training for pilots and parachutists, and other courses. It is an official training partner of SWISS International Air Lines.

The school flies from Locarno, which has more than 320 flying days a year and views over the Swiss lakes and the Alps. Students can also fly in the busy Milan airspace. They gain experience in Italy, Switzerland and Germany, with different weather, airspace rules and cultures.

The fleet includes the Diamond DA20, DA40 and DA42, the Tecnam P2008 and the Extra 200. For simulator work, the school has a Diamond DA42 simulator and an MPS 737NG flight training device. It has ordered a fleet of 12 new DA20i aircraft for primary training. AELO is an Authorized Flight Training Centre of Diamond Aircraft.

The school says it invested 6 million euros in 2024 in facilities and training technology. More than two thirds of its flight instructors are current airline pilots, and most are captains. It reports that 96 percent of its graduates have been hired by airlines such as SkyAlps, Swiss, Wizz Air, Ryanair and easyJet. Class sizes are small, and each student gets a personal training plan.
