Common questions

Updated 27 Oct 2026. Confirm the details with the company before you book.

How do I choose a flight school?
Start with the licence you need (private, commercial or the full airline route), then compare the schools near you or in the country you want to train in: the aircraft they fly, how many instructors and aircraft they have per student, whether they train full time, and the total price including exams, checkrides and accommodation. Visit the school and book a trial lesson before you pay for a course.
Which flight schools offer the full airline pilot route?
225 schools on this page mention ATPL or airline transport pilot training on their page, 557 mention the commercial pilot licence and 719 the private pilot licence. Use the specialty filter to see them on the map, then confirm the exact programme with the school.
Which schools take international students?
145 schools mention international or foreign students on their page, and 23 mention a student visa (in the United States, the M-1 visa and the I-20 form from an SEVP approved school). Use the International students filter, then ask the school about visas, accommodation and converting the licence in your home country.
Is there a helicopter, drone or maintenance course?
Yes: 225 schools mention helicopter pilot training, 33 drone or remote pilot courses, 73 aircraft maintenance engineer training (Part 66, A&P or AME) and 45 cabin crew courses. Pick the course in the specialty filter.
How is this list put together?
Every flight school with a page on The Flying Engineer (1,256 today). Countries and states come from each school's address; course, fleet and international student tags come from what its page says. Confirm courses, approvals and prices with the school before you enrol.
My school is missing or the details are wrong. What can I do?
Find your school and claim your page to correct the address, courses, fleet and photos. Agencies that market several schools can claim each page the same way. If a school is not listed yet, you can add it from the same page.
How many schools are listed?
1,256 schools in 78 countries, updated 27 Oct 2026. Most are in United States (664), Canada (78), Australia (61).

About flight schools

Flight schools and pilot training organisations

Flight schools train people to fly, from the first trial lesson to a professional licence. Most offer the private pilot licence (PPL), instrument and multi-engine ratings, the commercial pilot licence and flight instructor courses. Larger academies run integrated airline pilot programmes, while flying clubs and smaller schools focus on recreational flying and modular training at a local airfield. Students range from hobby pilots to cadets heading for airline jobs.

Check how the school is approved. In the United States, schools train under FAA Part 61 or Part 141 rules, and Part 141 schools follow an FAA-approved syllabus. In Europe, professional training must be done at an EASA Approved Training Organisation (ATO). Also compare fleet size and age, instructor availability, simulator access, the total cost including exams and checkrides, and how long students actually take to finish.

Flight schools in the directory

Our flight schools span many countries, most in the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom, followed by the Philippines and Spain.

Student pilots often need aviation loans and financing and aviation insurance, and some schools buy training aircraft through aircraft sales brokers. Our guides compare the best flight schools in the USA, the best flight schools in Europe and commercial pilot training costs by country.

About this list

Schools come from The Flying Engineer's flight school pages. Course, fleet and international student tags are matched from the words on each school's page, so a school that offers a course but does not mention it will not show the tag. Always confirm courses, approvals, visas and prices with the school directly. Last updated 27 Oct 2026.
