About University of Lincoln Security and Defence

University of Lincoln Security and Defence is the defence and security research area of the University of Lincoln in Lincoln, England. The university works with the armed forces and industry to share knowledge, build skills and carry out joint research. It describes itself as an anchor institution in a region with a rich military heritage.

The university says it aims to give its partners evidence-based and sustainable solutions in all forms of defence and security work. It holds the Gold Award of the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme and says it was one of the first universities to receive it. It also pledges support to members of the armed forces community, including its own students and staff.

One research project is a partnership with the Royal Air Force. Academics in diabetes, metabolism and inflammation are studying the issues faced by people with diabetes who work in a military setting.

The university lists several key centres and groups. It is part of the consortium, led by Capita, that provides training and education to the Royal Navy under Project Selborne. Its Maritime Studies Centre is part of Britannia Royal Naval College. The International Bomber Command Centre keeps a digital archive of personal stories from World War Two. Lincoln Business School offers work-based distance learning programmes for serving, reservist and veteran members of the armed forces. The Defence and Security Research Network works with the armed forces and industry partners to find solutions together.

Security and Defence is one of the university's five research strengths, with Net Zero, History and Heritage, Rural and Coastal Health, and Agri-food Technology. In the 2021 national Research Excellence Framework, more than three quarters of the university's research was rated internationally excellent or better.

Businesses can use the university's consultancy services, specialist centres, contract research and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. The university also lists industry links with Siemens Energy, Santander and the Lincolnshire Co-op. Its Sparkhouse incubation centre has supported over 1000 businesses.
