Smallsat manufacturer and satellite operations from Toulouse

About U-Space

U-Space is a French company in Toulouse that manufactures small satellites and constellations and provides ground operations for them. Its website says it was born from the CubeSat maker U-factor and describes an ambition to become one of the European leaders in smallsats. It aims to move the space industry away from its historical aversion to risk and to deliver faster and more efficiently.

Satellites

  • FreeForm: a platform for 140 kg micro-satellites designed for earth observation, radio frequency missions and in-orbit services, with a stated five year lifetime
  • A 16U platform with standardised interfaces, offering an 8U primary payload bay, half of the total volume, plus a dedicated 2U extension for elongated instruments such as optical payloads or deployable systems

The company states that hardware and software are designed together, and quotes payload power, pointing accuracy and downlink figures for its platforms, including an S-band downlink and an X-band downlink.

Operations and ground segment

  • Simple Control Center, which handles satellite command and control, automation of routine procedures and real-time health monitoring
  • Ground Networks Manager, which chooses the antennas for each pass and gives one access point to the ground network
  • Flight Dynamics System, covering orbit determination and prediction, manoeuvre calculation and collision risk management
  • Mission Interface Center, the gateway between U-Space and the customer mission centre for activity planning and payload data
  • A hybrid hardware-in-the-loop simulator that contains avionics and flight software identical to the customer's satellite

The control centre can be used as software as a service or on premise, operated through a human machine interface or a REST API. U-Space also offers end-to-end operations from orbit insertion to final disposal, and helps customers size their space segment and operations.

Factory

U-Space built its U-Zine factory in less than a year. It covers more than 1,000 square metres and meets ISO 8 cleanroom and ESD standards. The company says it has carried out a double launch and early orbit phase on a new satellite product, and that it takes responsibility for the customer's mission as an integrator. Skynopy has announced that U-Space selected it to support multiple missions.
