Twente Airport

Business aviation airport and sustainable air mobility test site in the eastern Netherlands

Twente Airport

About Twente Airport

Twente Airport is a general and business aviation airport in the east of the Netherlands and part of Technology Base, the innovation site on the former air base near Enschede. It describes itself as a Living Lab for Sustainable Air Mobility, a nursery for sustainable aviation and new forms of mobility, and it contributes to good connections from the east of the Netherlands to the rest of Europe by charter and private jet. Beyond business flights, the airport is used for testing and experimentation, recreational flying, aircraft parking and company premises for aviation-related businesses.

Facilities

  • A long, well-maintained runway, large open space, existing infrastructure, relatively quiet airspace and enough capacity on the electricity network to charge several electric aircraft, which the airport says makes it suitable for the development of electric and sustainable aviation
  • A fully fenced site of more than 220 hectares with indoor and outdoor test facilities, used for radar tests by NLR, Solar Team Twente testing, military exercises such as Falcon Leap and Orange Bull with Air Mobility Command tactical landings, Royal Netherlands Army unmanned systems exercises and drone security workshops
  • 20 aircraft stands, used among other things for the temporary storage of airliners; KLM parked an Embraer 195 E2 at the airport before returning it to service and flew a Boeing 737-800 to Twente on its last flight, and KLM Cityhopper won an award for a special event at the field
  • Fixed instrument approach and departure routes introduced to improve accessibility, and extended flying hours on the longest day of the year

Ecosystem

Entrepreneurs with airport-related activities can settle at Twente Airport among partners for whom innovating, developing and pioneering are everyday work. Aircraft End-of-Life Solutions (AELS), based at the airport, has recycled more than fifty aircraft in eleven years, from a Fokker 50 to Boeing 747s, with investment from Innovatiefonds Overijssel and Aalberts Investments. The first landing in the Netherlands of a fully electric five-seat aircraft took place at Twente, and the airport hosts events including the After Summer Fly-In, Wheels and Wings, the AELS Runway Run for the KiKa children's cancer charity, the SPRINT Robotics World Conference and expert meetings on electric flying. The province of Overijssel is the competent authority for the airport.
