Tata Advanced Systems

Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) is the aerospace and defence arm of the Tata Group and a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons. It is both an operating and a holding company, with subsidiaries that include Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited, Tata Lockheed Martin Aerospace Limited and Tata Sikorsky Aerospace Limited. The company positions itself as a partner for the Indian government's Make in India programme and for global original equipment manufacturers, and says the Tata group has supplied India's armed forces for more than six decades.

Aerostructures and aero-engines

TASL delivers design and engineering, tool design and manufacture, complex machining, composites, sheet metal fabrication and equipped airframe assemblies through four centres of excellence: aerostructure assembly, metallics, composites and aero-engines. The aero-engines centre is built as a digital factory with real-time manufacturing execution systems. The company is a partner on Airbus A320 and A350 and Boeing 737 and 787 programmes, has produced structures for the Boeing AH-64 Apache and Lockheed Martin C-130J, and makes engine parts such as acoustic panels, liners, fairings, casings and seals for GE and Rolls-Royce. It reports more than 600 suppliers across 120 countries and work packages transferred from North America, Europe and Asia. Its production system, SAKSHAM, standardises lean and visual factory practices, and it has taken complex aerostructure programmes from green field to production in twelve months.

Airborne platforms and systems

This division focuses on mission systems integration and local manufacturing and final assembly of fixed and rotary wing platforms, including the Lockheed Martin F-21 partnership, a naval utility helicopter partnership and the Airbus C295 programme. TASL has developed unmanned aerial systems in use or on trial with the armed forces, paramilitary and state police, as well as advanced loitering systems, mission computers, on-board computers, military GPS units, gimballed payloads and ground control stations. It also works with ISRO on satellite assembly, integration and testing, and has produced the Lanza-N 3D air surveillance radar in India with Indra.

Other businesses

TASL offers missile systems, rocket and missile launchers, fuel cell auxiliary power units and land mobility solutions, from combat and light armoured vehicles to tactical, logistic and mission support vehicles. It describes itself as the largest private sector mobility player in Indian defence.
