Swiss Airtainer SA

Swiss Airtainer SA makes active temperature controlled containers for pharmaceutical air cargo. Its containers keep medicines within set temperatures during air transport. The company is based in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, and describes its work as cold chain transport for medicines shipped by air.

Each container has dual independent heating and cooling systems. These systems work across a range from minus 30 to plus 50 degrees Celsius. The company says the container follows Good Distribution Practice rules for pharmaceutical logistics, and that the unit is fully compliant with these requirements.

The company says its container has a tare weight of 390 kg, which it describes as 260 kg or 40 percent lighter than a standard unit. It says this cuts fuel use in flight. The container has 16 sensors for real time tracking and remote access, along with solar panels that help power it. The maximum payload is 1,188 kg and the internal volume is 2.4 cubic meters.

Swiss Airtainer says it reduces CO2 emissions by 48 percent and aims to combine lower emissions with lower operating costs. The company describes itself as a pioneer in greener air cargo. The container is certified as a ULD by EASA and the FAA, and carries the IATA code SW.

Customers and partners include Emirates, Swiss World Cargo, Saudia Cargo, Delta Cargo, Air Canada and DHL. Delta Cargo approved its RKN container in December 2024. In August 2025 Envirotainer invested in the company. Field tests on a tarmac at Dubai airport in extreme heat and a two week test in the Swiss mountains in winter are also reported.
