StartGuides
Mobile equipment guides for military operators and maintainers
About StartGuides
StartGuides, LLC builds mobile apps that give military operators and maintainers the knowledge they need to set up, operate, troubleshoot and maintain equipment at the point of need. Founded more than ten years ago in the United States, the company has developed nearly 200 apps for the US Department of Defense, other government agencies and commercial clients, covering software products, radios, weapon systems, sensors, large vehicles and more. Customer logos on its site include the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, US Customs and Border Protection, DHS, DTRA, Canadian Special Operations Forces and the New Zealand Army, and its apps score 4.9 out of 5 from 47 reviews.
Products
- Performance Support Apps (PSA): built for operators, helping service members set up, operate and troubleshoot their equipment
- Maintenance Support Apps (MSA): built for maintainers, with clear instructions from field maintenance to depot-level tasks
- App-based, authenticated manuals, described as a first for the DoD
- Distribution and sustainment of apps, including collections of apps customised for a community and updates as equipment changes
Approach
Content is produced in-house by writers, illustrators and designers working to the company's own style guide, organised so that it is accessible and easy to read, with illustrations that explain complex tasks. The apps work with or without a network, on handheld devices or laptops, in the classroom or in the field, and average about 50 MB in size. StartGuides says it safeguards data in line with US Government and DoD regulations, and that its apps have been vetted by several DoD agencies for use on DoD-provisioned tactical devices. The company argues that one-size documentation does not fit all equipment types and that its apps avoid the network, software and storage demands of other digital manuals. Testimonials quoted on the site come from a SOCOM acquisitions professional and a US Army robotic maintenance instructor.
