Skynopy
Ground station as a service for satellite operators
About Skynopy
Skynopy is a French company, based in Paris, that offers ground station as a service for satellite operators. Its website describes an end-to-end service that lets operators communicate with satellites in low Earth orbit, with the aim of making ground segment access as simple as mobile connectivity.
What Skynopy provides
- A hybrid ground station network that combines a timeshared antenna system with Skynopy's own ground stations, orchestrated through its platform with virtualised modem technology
- Access to the ground networks through a single API
- A choice of onboard radio and antennas, and support for satellite to ground testing and integration
- Optimisation of the ground station network and of modulation and coding, to improve data latency and revisit time
- End-to-end sovereignty of data from satellite to cloud, through a network of strategically located stations that gives multiple contacts per orbit
Partnerships and news
The company lists a series of announcements on its site. Eutelsat and Skynopy are developing a software-defined ground network, and Eutelsat has also partnered with it to explore opening OneWeb ground stations to Earth observation. Airbus has improved the performance of the Pleiades Neo ground segment through Skynopy's ground station services. U-Space selected Skynopy to support multiple missions, and Look Up and Skynopy partnered on an automated satellite collision avoidance service. Skynopy signed a frequency management partnership with the French space agency CNES, the European Space Agency backed it to bring adaptive modulation to Earth observation satellites, and the French Defense Innovation Agency launched the SkyFortress experiment with it.
Growth
Skynopy has expanded its global network to Kenya. Press coverage listed on its site reports that it raised 15 million euro to expand its ground station service and that it has funds for an expansion of more than 100 antennas. CEO Pierre Bertrand has spoken publicly about ground stations and the future of satellite connectivity.
