NSW Ambulance is Australia’s oldest state ambulance service, established on 1 April 1895 as the Civil Ambulance and Transport Brigade. With over 125 years of operational experience, NSW Ambulance provides emergency medical response, patient transport, and aeromedical services to 7.25 million residents across 801,600 square kilometers.
The service operates 24/7 through Triple Zero (000) emergency dispatch, coordinating over 4,000 staff including paramedics, control center operators, flight nurses, and helicopter paramedics.
The Virtual Clinical Care Centre manages patient triage and care coordination across metropolitan, rural, and regional NSW. For aviation professionals and healthcare providers exploring emergency medical services in Australia, NSW Ambulance delivers proven expertise in pre-hospital emergency care and aeromedical retrieval.
NSW Ambulance specializes in emergency medical response requiring rapid patient assessment and transport to appropriate medical facilities. Services include Triple Zero (000) emergency response, inter-hospital patient transport, aeromedical retrieval, rescue operations, counter-disaster response, and community education programs.
The Air Ambulance fleet includes helicopters and fixed-wing jets for remote area retrieval and time-critical transfers, with two additional jets added in 2024 to expand aeromedical capabilities. These aircraft operate alongside other air ambulance services serving the Australian region.
NSW Ambulance coordinates with hospitals, emergency services, and retrieval teams throughout the state. The GoodSAM app alerts trained volunteers to respond to cardiac arrest emergencies before paramedics arrive. The service pioneered the world-first PRECARE trial and became the first NSW emergency service to achieve gender parity. NSW Ambulance has been voted Australia’s most trusted profession by Readers Digest for seven years running.
The Triple Zero (000) emergency dispatch system manages all emergency responses from initial call to ambulance arrival. When callers contact Triple Zero, operators transfer the call to NSW Ambulance control center staff. Dispatchers assess the emergency and coordinate appropriate response units including standard ambulances, intensive care vehicles, rapid response units, or aeromedical aircraft.
The Virtual Clinical Care Centre ensures patients receive the most appropriate and timely care pathway.
NSW Ambulance maintains specialized response capabilities for challenging environments. Eight hazardous area rescue ambulances and eight inflatable rescue boats deployed in 2024 enhance response during natural disasters. Special operations teams handle complex rescues while snow operations units serve alpine regions. The service also coordinates airplane medical transport for patients requiring long-distance transfers or interstate repatriation.
