Ministry of Defence (United Kingdom)

UK government department for the armed forces and national defence

About Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is the United Kingdom government department responsible for the armed forces and national defence. Its stated aim is a secure and prosperous United Kingdom with global reach and influence, protecting the UK's people, territories, values and interests at home and overseas through strong armed forces and in partnership with allies. MOD is a ministerial department supported by 24 agencies and public bodies.

Purpose and priorities

The ministry's purpose is to protect the nation and help it prosper. Its priorities are to protect the UK, its Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories; to pursue a campaigning approach to counter threats from state and non-state actors; and to secure strategic advantage, greater economic and industrial resilience and a contribution to national prosperity. The Strategic Defence Review 2025, Making Britain Safer: secure at home, strong abroad, sets out how these priorities will be delivered.

People

MOD employs trained and untrained personnel in the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, together with a civilian workforce that includes the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, trading funds such as the UK Hydrographic Office, and locally engaged civilians who support the UK presence overseas. The UK regular forces comprise full-time trained and untrained personnel, supported by reserves.
