Lootah Biofuels

Used cooking oil collection and biodiesel production in Dubai since 2010

About Lootah Biofuels

Lootah Biofuels was founded in 2010 in Dubai to address the growing demand for alternative fuels in the region. It describes itself as the first commercial biofuel company in the Middle East and one of the biggest collectors of used cooking oil in the UAE, operating under authorisation from Dubai Municipality and paying suppliers for the oil it collects. Its stated mission is to deliver economic, operational and environmental benefits for long-term customer satisfaction and sustainable growth, and it aims to research, develop and produce sustainable biofuels as clean, reliable alternatives to fossil fuels for transport that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve security of energy supply. The main office is on the second floor of the S.S. Lootah Building on Salahuddin Road in Deira, Dubai, with an outlet in Al Qusais Industrial Area 3.

Products and services

  • Used cooking oil (UCO) collection from restaurants, hotels and households, including a Lootah Biofuels app through which users request a collection of their used cooking oil so that it is turned into biofuel instead of ending up in landfill or incinerators
  • Biodiesel B100 produced from used cooking oil, blended with ultra low sulphur petro diesel in a 5:95 ratio to make biodiesel B5, which the company offers to the UAE market as a diesel blending agent that acts as a lubricant and reduces the carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions of vehicles, with no engine modifications required
  • Glycerine, a by-product of biodiesel production, used in applications such as alkyd resins, and a glycerine soap described as both moisturising and suitable for all skin types

Leadership and initiatives

The chief executive is Yousif Bin Saeed Al Lootah, who oversees daily operations in the UAE and internationally as well as the company's strategic direction, growth and expansion. Before launching Lootah Biofuels he was involved in sustainability initiatives such as the Green Car Program. According to the site he seeks a target of 70 percent of transportation in the GCC market coming from renewable and sustainable sources, and wants the UAE to be the first nation in the region to make biofuel blends mandatory at all public filling stations. The company has also signed agreements with educational institutions to raise awareness and provide training for young people in the region, and its work has been covered by Khaleej Times.
