About Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, known as LASP, is a research institute at the University of Colorado Boulder in the United States. The mailing address is 1234 Innovation Drive, Boulder, CO 80303, and the phone number is (303) 492-6412.

LASP began in 1948 as the Upper Air Laboratory. It took its current name in the mid 1960s. The site says its work started with early rocket measurements of the upper atmosphere. Today it covers solar, planetary and space physics, climate and space weather monitoring, and the search for signs of habitable worlds.

The institute lists five areas of expertise. These are science, engineering, mission operations, data systems and business facilitation. Its site also has sections on missions, instruments, labs and facilities.

LASP says it is the highest budget research institute at CU Boulder. It reports more than 1 billion dollars in research revenue since 2013. It also says it is the only academic research institute to send instruments to all eight planets, to Pluto and beyond. Its mission list includes MAVEN, Cassini, New Horizons, Parker Solar Probe, GOLD and IMAP.

Students are part of the team. The site says undergraduate and graduate students of the university work in every department. Recent news covers the INFUSE-2 sounding rocket launch and the SPRITE mission. The site also has pages for careers, media, educators and collaborators.
