GhostWriter Airshows

Super Chipmunk day shows, night pyrobatics and skywriting

About GhostWriter Airshows

GhostWriter Airshows is a US airshow performance team based at 280 Airport Road in Danville, Kentucky, built around a 1956 de Havilland Chipmunk modified into a Super Chipmunk for aerobatics and skywriting. The aircraft had a 25-year career as the Pepsi SkyDancer before Nathan K. Hammond took the controls in 2016, and nearly 3,000 man-hours over two years went into developing it into what the team describes as the finest example of a Super Chipmunk, with a 350 horsepower engine and a 200 mph display speed. The team presents itself as a true three-act performer offering day shows, night shows and skywriting at airshows across the United States.

Performances

  • Day aerobatics: a smoking, high-energy display of loops, rolls and long verticals that opens the show and fills the sky with the larger Chipmunk airframe
  • Night pyrobatics: a celebration of light with 4,000 LED lights and more than 200 pounds of pyrotechnics attached to the aircraft, with fully customisable lights and pyro to match a show's theme, such as a red, white and blue veterans salute
  • Skywriting, included with every contracted airshow: messages up to 24 characters per flight written two miles high and ten miles wide, visible for 20 miles in every direction and offered to organisers as a sky billboard for their sponsors, from smiley faces and hearts to marriage proposals

Team

Nathan K. Hammond grew up in Rhinebeck, New York, where the aircraft and airshows of Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome sparked his interest in aviation; he soloed at 16, earned his pilot's licence at 17 and has more than 8,000 flight hours. Kelley manages business logistics and daily airshow operations, prepares the 250 pounds of pyrotechnics used in each night show and runs the team's merchandise, and Alex joined in 2021 as crew chief and ferry pilot, also flying the photo plane and contributing to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum alongside an airline career. The schedule lists appearances including Wings Over North Georgia, the Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo, the Vero Beach Airshow, the National Cherry Festival, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the Oregon International Airshow at McMinnville, the Terre Haute Airshow, the California Capital Airshow, the Minden Tahoe Airshow and the NAS Pensacola Blue Angels Homecoming. The site also offers a media kit and a sponsor page.
