About Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS

Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is a research institute in Germany. It works on microelectronics and IT systems for industry. Its website is available in German, English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

The institute groups its work into research areas. These are audio and media technologies, communication systems, a development centre for X-ray technology, engineering of adaptive systems, positioning and networks, smart sensing and electronics, and supply chain services. It also runs the Bavarian Chip-Design-Center, which covers chip design talent, the chip supply chain and the design ecosystem. A research area on embodied AI covers robotics.

Audio and media is a major field. The institute says it contributed to the Emmy-winning MPEG CMAF standard. A product line called Allinga offers an AI model factory and text-to-speech tools. A Research Cinema serves as a testbed.

The institute also has strategic initiatives. They cover 5G and 6G mobile communication systems, neuromorphic computing, a smart circular economy and X-ray imaging in e-mobility. Future initiatives include 5G Bavaria, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and a Campus of the Senses. It is part of the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany and the APECS pilot line.

The Development Center X-ray Technology applies X-ray methods in many areas. They include monitoring the production of cast parts, sensor-based sorting, imaging of energy storage devices, and imaging for fuel cells and electrolyzers.

One example of applied work is BlueBob, a field robot built with a seed supplier. It removes weeds from sugar beet fields. Multispectral cameras record the plants, and AI sorts crops from weeds in real time. The robot works on between 0.5 and 1 hectares per hour and runs autonomously. The institute also does joint research on biogenic value creation with a university of applied sciences. Companies can work with the institute through projects, seminars and workshops.
