About EAA

EAA, the Experimental Aircraft Association, is a growing membership organization for people with many kinds of aviation interests. It was founded in 1953 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by people who wanted to build their own airplanes. Its scope now includes antiques, classics, warbirds, aerobatic aircraft, ultralights, helicopters and contemporary manufactured aircraft.

EAA supports aircraft builders and restorers. It offers builder resources, a kits and plans page, an EAA Builders Log and volunteer help for builders. Its SportAir Workshops are hands-on weekend workshops that are now available online. EAA also runs Homebuilders Week.

EAA says that experimental amateur-built aircraft are the fastest growing segment of new aircraft in the United States. Builders certify these aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration as experimental amateur-built, often called homebuilts.

EAA runs learning programs for new pilots. These include Learn To Fly Week, free introductory flights, scholarships, a Sport Pilot Academy and flight training resources. Its youth programs include free Young Eagles flights, aviation camps, AeroEducate and aviation internships.

EAA worked with the FAA on MOSAIC, the final rule that created Sport Pilot 2.0 and Next-Gen Light Sport. Phase one took effect on 22 October 2025, and new aircraft can enter the fleet from July 2026.

EAA hosts EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and runs the EAA Aviation Museum with its museum events and education programs. Local chapters bring members together, and the site offers chapter resources, chapter awards and training for chapter leaders.

Members get member benefits, an aviation job search, government advocacy and membership options such as Legacy membership. The EAA Aviation Foundation accepts gifts. The website also has an online shop, videos, a blog, webinars and a media room.
