Dovetail Electric Aviation

Electric conversions of Cessna Caravan and King Air aircraft

About Dovetail Electric Aviation

Dovetail Electric Aviation converts legacy regional and general aviation aircraft to electric propulsion using batteries and range extension technology. Founded in 2020 with a mission to reduce the carbon footprint of regional transport, the company has offices at Unit 10/38 Down Street in Collingwood, Victoria, Australia and at Calle Anemona 15 in Lepe, Huelva, Spain, where Dovetail Electric Aviation SL has received a grant from the Government of Andalusia financed by the European Union through the FSE+ Andalucia 2021 to 2027 programme. Its vision is to lead regional and general aviation into a sustainable era by enabling operators to fly commercially viable routes in zero-emission, electric-powered aircraft.

Products

  • DovePower, a fully integrated electric propulsion system that replaces conventional engines with a 671 kW direct-drive motor, high-efficiency inverters and a smart power distribution unit, designed to be compact, scalable and certification-ready
  • DovePack, a high-voltage, lightweight aerospace battery module using lithium-ion cells with direct cooling, engineered for high altitudes and varying temperatures
  • The all-electric Cessna Ecaravan, a retrofit of the Cessna 208 Caravan with a 52 foot 1 inch wingspan and 37 foot 7 inch length, aimed at ultra-short to short-range flights such as scenic tours, skydiving and island hopping, with the option to upgrade to hydrogen-electric power in future
  • A conversion programme for the Beechcraft King Air

Business case and progress

  • A 100 percent electric propulsion system that the company says can cut operating costs by up to 40 percent, with fewer moving parts giving a time between overhauls almost three times that of a standard engine, no jet fuel costs and conversion costs amortised in less than three years, with a serviceable obtainable market calculated for the Cessna 208 alone
  • Milestones listed on the site include concept design and wind tunnel testing of the DAX-19 distributed propulsion aircraft developed by co-founder Dante Aeronautical, a strategic motor supply partner, European strategic investors, a lead strategic investor, 50 aircraft conversion orders and a 3 million dollar grant from the Australian Federal Government for demonstration of the complete electric system
  • A board that includes an adviser who is managing director of the Spanish regional airline Air Nostrum

Approach

Dovetail describes itself as true zero emissions, rejecting hybrid systems and hydrogen combustion in favour of batteries and fuel cells with electricity and hydrogen from renewable sources. It emphasises connecting communities today rather than next decade, making use of existing aircraft and infrastructure, and working together with partners, investors, customers and employees.
