DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung
German air navigation service provider with four control centres
About DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung
DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is the air navigation service provider for Germany. Its job is to keep aircraft separated and guide them safely through German airspace. German airspace is one of the busiest in the world. The company says it handles around 30 percent of European air traffic in three percent of European airspace, around the clock and 365 days a year.
Every year, DFS helps millions of passengers reach their destinations safely and efficiently. The company works to keep aircraft on time and to avoid major detours. It also works to make flights as environmentally friendly as possible. Intelligent flight routes and low noise procedures help reduce aircraft noise. DFS says this work depends on teamwork and technical innovation.
Air traffic control is the core service. DFS provides air traffic control for airlines and general aviation. Its customer area serves all pilots who fly under instrument flight rules, including airline, business and general aviation operators. The company also offers flight inspection of instrument landing systems. Recent flight inspections were carried out at Munich and Frankfurt airports.
For private pilots who fly under visual flight rules, DFS helps with flight preparation and current airspace restrictions. It also offers a VFR newsletter. Air sports enthusiasts, such as aerobatic pilots and parachutists, have their own contact person. The company also lists leisure activities that need a permit or approval, such as releasing balloons or launching fireworks.
DFS provides drone traffic management and drone approvals. Its website has a checklist for drone pilots, an FAQ, and information on applications, approvals and drones at airports. On noise and the environment, DFS introduces satellite based departure and approach procedures. It also uses continuous climb and continuous descent procedures to lower noise and fuel use. DFS does not operate any aircraft. Its work follows rules set by the German Federal Government, the EU and ICAO.
The DFS Academy offers a wide range of initial and continuing training products for air traffic staff. Recently, around 200 new recruits started their careers at DFS. The company says it works with international partners and takes part in civil and military coordination. Its website is available in German and English.
