About AirNav Ireland

AirNav Ireland is the air navigation service provider for Ireland. It is a commercial semi-state company with about 600 people at six locations around Ireland. Its main job is to provide air traffic management in the 451,000 square kilometres of airspace that Ireland controls. That airspace is a gateway between Europe and North America.

The company provides air traffic control at Dublin, Shannon and Cork airports. It also runs en route services from its centre at Ballycasey in County Clare. Over 200 air traffic controllers work in Dublin, Cork and Shannon. Terminal services are listed as a separate service line.

AirNav Ireland provides flight information, alerting, and search and rescue services. It also manages aeronautical information, including NOTAMs. Its North Atlantic communications centre at Ballygirreen in County Clare employs 50 radio officers. The site says the North Atlantic service has kept aircraft connected since 1936 and marks 90 years of that work.

Pilots can use an online flight planning area to file, change, delay or cancel flight plans. The area also includes weather information. The company runs a student controller programme for people who want to train as air traffic controllers.

The company says safety is its business. It follows standards set by ICAO, EUROCONTROL, the European Civil Aviation Conference, EASA and the European Union. In 2024 it reported a 90% maturity score under the CANSO and EUROCONTROL safety management standard. The site says that places Ireland in the top 10 air navigation service providers.

AirNav Ireland receives no state funding. Its revenue comes from charges and fees paid by airline customers. Its sustainability work includes CANSO Green ATM accreditation, Dublin Point Merge, continuous climb and descent operations, and high intensity runway operations. It also takes part in the SESAR GEESE wake energy retrieval project and runs a sustainability management plan from 2024 to 2029.

The company also works on air traffic management systems and technology, innovation and EU funded projects. Its customers are airlines and the pilots who fly through Irish airspace. Its headquarters are in Dublin 2.
