About Continuum Dynamics

Continuum Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) is a research and development firm that serves government and industry. The company was founded in 1979. Its work covers analysis, software research and development, and testing. For over 40 years it has carried out contract research, software development and licensing, engineering and design, and test support.

Rotorcraft is a major focus. CDI develops aerodynamic and aeromechanics analysis for helicopters, multirotor drones, and distributed propulsion eVTOL and eSTOL vehicles. It also offers design support for urban air mobility and advanced air mobility aircraft. Its work includes fixed-wing aircraft as well.

The company designs rotor blades and propellers. Its rotor blades include bolt-on upgrades for civilian and military helicopters, and clean-sheet designs for main and tail rotors. The company lists rotor blade programs for the Erickson S-64, the Carson S-61 and the Schiebel S-100. Its main rotor blades are installed on the VH-3D presidential helicopter. It says its certified and fielded designs operate worldwide.

CDI also builds software for analysis and simulation. CHARM is its rotorcraft analysis code, and it is coupled with PSU-WOPWOP for aircraft noise prediction. CHARM Modules support real time flight simulation and training. The CGE software suite provides CFD analysis. The company is also the lead developer of the AGDISP family of software for aerial application modeling.

Flight simulation and training is another area. CDI works on physics-based analysis of ship airwakes, building flows, urban canyons, formation flight, vortex ring state and downwash. It develops active flight control systems for helicopters, VTOLs, multirotors and fixed-wing aircraft. Its wake modeling work includes real time free wake development.

Environmental work includes agrochemical application modeling for helicopters, aircraft, drones and ground sprayers. The company models wind turbines and wind farms, and it designs self-protecting variable geometry wind turbines for expeditionary and offshore use. It also covers prediction of fuel jettisoning and the aerial application of dispersant onto oil spills.

Nuclear and advanced engineering work includes acoustic circuit analysis, flow induced vibration and power uprate solutions for power plants. It has tested emergency cooling water strainers and built advanced piping system models. Its computational methods work includes Fast Multipole Methods, HPC communication tools and mesh generation for complex surfaces.
