Commercial SmallSat Spectrum Management Association
Spectrum coordination for commercial smallsat operators
About Commercial SmallSat Spectrum Management Association
The Commercial SmallSat Spectrum Management Association (CSSMA) unites the commercial small satellite community around responsible radio spectrum use. It works to make spectrum coordination streamlined, open and faster. It has more than 40 members from at least 11 countries.
Many commercial small satellite operators use spectrum on a non-exclusive basis. Other satellite or terrestrial operators, including government agencies such as US federal agencies, may use the same bands. Shared use calls for interference analyses and extensive coordination. Most of this must be finished as part of the regulatory licensing process. CSSMA helps current and future operators understand and influence this world.
The association describes four steps. Members identify frequency needs and plan spectrum use early for upcoming missions. They coordinate with peers, using shared scheduling and working groups to avoid conflicts. They engage regulators to align with US and international licensing. This lets them launch and scale with clarity.
CSSMA's work covers four areas. Regulatory advocacy aims to influence FCC and international rulemaking. Spectrum coordination supports member-to-member pre-coordination. Best practices share guidance and technical insight. Global engagement represents smallsats at major events and summits. The association brings operators and regulators from around the world together through working groups, pre-coordination meetings and other events.
Membership is open to smallsat operators, launch and ground station service providers, and space policy advocates. Legal practitioners and technical consultants, trade associations, universities and non-profits can join, as can government spectrum managers and regulators. A newsletter shares updates on policy changes, meetings and opportunities.
