About Badland Batteries

Badland Batteries makes lithium-ion batteries for drones, eVTOLs and uncrewed aircraft systems, engineered, assembled and tested in the United States at 3241 South University Drive in Fargo, North Dakota, by the Packet Digital team. Designed specifically for UAS platforms, the batteries aim to deliver longer cycle life, larger payloads and longer flight times through a combination of high energy density and high power, and the company presents them as its answer to the question of what the best drone battery is for power, performance and reliability. Badland Batteries is led by chief executive Terri Zimmerman, who also heads Packet Digital.

Products and heritage

  • Off-the-shelf UAS lithium-ion battery packs, such as the Badland 6S shown on the site, sold to drone operators and integrators as US-built, supported products
  • Packet Digital's custom battery development experience, including a contract from Lockheed Martin to design and manufacture batteries for the Indago 4 UAS platform; a Lockheed Martin chief engineer quoted on the site reports a pack reaching 1,000 cycles over six months of testing with only 11 percent degradation, which he calls ten times better than anything seen before
  • Years of experience building drone batteries and charging systems for demanding customers across the UAS industry

Mission and values

The company's stated mission is to improve lives by creating hardware, software and implementation solutions for autonomous systems, with a vision of being the trusted, industry-recognised platform for autonomous systems products, design and implementation services. Its values include creativity and pride in its work, flexibility and curiosity, and collaborative, open communication, and it invites operators to discuss their system type and battery needs directly with its engineers.
