Arris Composites
High-volume carbon fibre parts for drones and aerospace via Additive Molding
About Arris Composites
ARRIS Composites is a high-volume producer of advanced carbon fibre composite parts for drones, aerospace, cycling and consumer products, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Berkeley, California, with offices and manufacturing hubs in the United States, Taiwan and Malaysia. The company both makes the material and moulds the structure, consolidating complex assemblies into lighter, lower-cost carbon fibre parts built for production, with parts made in the USA or Taiwan. Its patented Additive Molding platform combines composite design software, materials and high-volume continuous fibre compression moulding, complemented by Cross Scale long fibre injection moulding, and the company has signed a contract manufacturer to raise Additive Molding capacity beyond one million parts.
Drone and aerospace parts
- Drone arms and motor mounts moulded as one part, drop-in replacements for cut-laminate arms with the same bolt pattern and matched stiffness, and consolidation of 17 parts into one on the Skydio X2 drone
- Structural brackets and components that replace machined metal or cut laminate with no secondary machining, with bosses and inserts moulded in, as-moulded tolerances of plus or minus 0.1 mm, about three times tighter than cut laminate, and first articles in 10 to 14 days
- Parts at half the weight of aluminium at the same stiffness and 79 percent lighter than 3D-printed titanium
- An Airbus programme on reducing weight to save fuel, and white papers on topology optimisation and fibre orientation for an aerospace bracket, radio frequency performance of advanced composites near antennas, and high-performance flax fibre natural composites
Other markets
In cycling, ARRIS produces carbon fibre spokes at volume, testing every spoke before it ships, as well as suspension linkages and pedals; in footwear it developed the carbon fibre plate for Brooks Running shoes worn at the Boston Marathon. Its leadership team draws on additive manufacturing, high-volume manufacturing, advanced composites, materials science and industrial automation, and investors shown on the site include NEA, Taiwania Capital, Bosch, Valo Ventures, Alumni Ventures, XN, Zebra Technologies, Vertex Holdings and Youngone.
