About Airbus Urban Mobility

Airbus Urban Mobility is the part of Airbus that works on electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and advanced air mobility (AAM). Its current aircraft is the CityAirbus NextGen prototype. The work sits within Airbus Helicopters, and the prototype was shown to the public in Donauwörth, Germany, on 7 March 2024.

CityAirbus NextGen

CityAirbus NextGen is an all-electric, four-seat eVTOL prototype. It uses a lift and cruise design.

  • Range: 80 km
  • Cruise speed: 120 km/h
  • Weight class: two tonnes
  • Wingspan: about 12 metres
  • Fixed wings and a V-shaped tail
  • Eight electric propellers in a distributed propulsion system

Planned uses

Airbus says the aircraft is suited to city operations such as medical flights, shuttle services and eco-tourism. Airbus Helicopters and International SOS have launched LifeSaver, an emergency medical services programme that could use this type of aircraft.

Building the AAM ecosystem

Airbus works with regulators on safety standards and with partners on infrastructure, airspace integration and vertiports. In Germany it leads the Air Mobility Initiative (AMI), a set of research projects on eVTOL aircraft, UTM services and airport and city integration.
