1PAX

1PAX is an architecture and innovation studio that designs airports, train stations and other transport hubs around the world. It works on complex places where large numbers of people move every day. The studio combines architecture, systems and innovation to improve the passenger experience.

In airports and rail stations, the studio plans how an airport works and designs its envelope and interior. It organises passenger and airport flows and sizes the horizontal and vertical circulation. It also designs high-speed, regional and metro stations, depots and transport logistics. Other work includes multimodal connections, fire safety code reviews, baggage handling system feasibility studies and aircraft stand layout studies.

1PAX also works on urban planning around airports. It develops strategies for airport cities and plans road access and car parks. It studies aircraft circulation, runs vehicle turn simulations, and sizes and places ancillary buildings. It plans construction phasing and the link between building works and live operations. It also reviews traffic forecasts and airport security.

The studio runs an innovation and research practice. This covers cart design, modular airport furniture and ways to improve the passenger experience. It also licenses its innovations and commercialises patents. Other service areas include future mobility, such as modern manufacturing facilities, industrial buildings, retail and interior design, working and living spaces, and BIM.

Its project list includes the new terminal building at Velana International Airport in Male, Maldives, and phases 1 and 2 at Nikola Tesla Airport in Belgrade, Serbia. It also worked on the new extension at Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport in Guadeloupe and on the new Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 refurbishment at Sofia Airport in Bulgaria. Another project is the first European taxidrone vertiport in Cergy Pontoise, France. A terminal in Cape Town, South Africa, is also listed.

The studio says it has offices across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Its office list includes Guadeloupe, Conakry, Monterrey, Piura, Lima, Santa Cruz, Panama City, Los Cabos and Cape Verde. Its team is multicultural and works in several languages. The company describes its approach as human-centred, with sustainability built in from the first day of each project. It reports more than 50 clients and partners, and it runs a graduate fellowship for architects from low and middle income countries.
