University chair at TU Dresden, Germany, for aircraft structures, composites, simulation and aircraft design, with research flights.

About TU Dresden Chair of Aircraft Engineering

The Chair of Aircraft Engineering is a university group at TUD Dresden University of Technology in Germany. It is part of the Institute of Aerospace Engineering. The site says the chair is led by Prof. Dr. Johannes Markmiller, who has held the post since 2020.

The chair focuses on research and teaching for modern aviation. Its work aims at future concepts for sustainable and high-performance aircraft. Research centers on the design, simulation and optimization of aircraft structures, with special attention to fibre-reinforced composites and new ways of building. It also looks at how aircraft structures hold up when damaged, using numerical and test methods.

The research is grouped into three areas. These are the design, analysis and testing of aircraft structures, the development of simulation and optimization tools for aircraft structures, and the early design of aircraft.

The teaching covers the whole development of an aircraft, from design through construction and production to maintenance. Students work in mixed teams on realistic tasks and take part in current research projects. The chair also lists lectures for each term and exam dates.

The staff includes licensed pilots. The site says this lets the chair keep its research aircraft in good order and carry out experimental flight campaigns. News on the site covers a visit to the ECCM 2026 conference in Oslo, an open day at the SML construction site in Hoyerswerda and work to inspire young people in aviation. The visiting address is Marschnerstraße 32, 01307 Dresden.
