ThermAvant Technologies

ThermAvant Technologies designs and manufactures oscillating heat pipe (OHP) thermal management hardware for space, defence and high-technology systems from a 45,000 square foot facility at 2508 Paris Road, Columbia, Missouri. The company was founded in 2007 by Dr Bill Ma, Dr Bin Wu and Joe Boswell, who were introduced through the Department of Energy, filed its first patent that year and won its first research grant in 2009. In 2017 it delivered OHP thermal straps for the ASETS-II experiment led by the Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate, which flew aboard the X-37B spaceplane, and in 2018 R and D World named ThermAvant and AFRL winners of the R and D 100 award in the materials and mechanical category. ThermAvant reports more than USD 50 million in research and development behind its products, OHPs that have passed 10 million on-orbit operating hours, and customers including 11 of the top 18 US defence contractors.

Oscillating heat pipes

An oscillating or pulsating heat pipe is a pump-free heat transfer device that uses fluid oscillation to move heat. ThermAvant's OHPs are typically 30 percent lighter than the base material, can be made from under 1 mm thick to over 1 m long, are insensitive to gravity with testing from 0 to 10 G, reach thermal conductivity up to 100 times the base material, operate from below 80 K to above 1,900 K and handle heat fluxes above 300 W per square centimetre.

• OHP heat frames and circuit card chassis for densely packed VPX and other electronics
• Structural spacecraft radiators and radiator baseplates from 0.2 m to 1.5 m long, 1 mm to 5 mm thick, for heat loads from under 10 W to over 1 kW, including deployable small satellite radiators and 6U CubeSat configurations
• Cold plates, OHP packages, device-level structural heat spreaders and drop-in replacement doublers 1 to 3 mm thick with 5 to 50 times the conductivity of solid aluminium, copper or graphite composites
• Battery packages, heat transporters and thermal straps, vapour chambers and wick-based heat pipes

Services and certifications

ThermAvant offers product development, design services, in-house manufacturing with CNC machinery, and testing, from prototyping to flight hardware, and has run production of thousands of units per order. It describes itself as the first and only AS9100 and ISO 9001 certified manufacturer of OHP thermal solutions, is registered with the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls for ITAR, and makes its products in the USA.
