Sunset Industries

Sunset Industries is a contract manufacturer of precision CNC machined parts in Mentor, Ohio. The company has been family owned and operated since 1959. Its website says most of what it makes flies, and the same discipline goes into every part, from aircraft fuel systems to industrial equipment.

The shop runs 2 to 6 axis lathes, multi axis mill turn centers and 3 to 5 axis mills. It also offers grinding, broaching, EDM, managed special processes and assembly. Parts are built to customer specifications under an AS9100D quality system and an ISO 9001:2015 system.

Multi axis turning is the company's core strength. It uses B axis multitasking centers with sub spindles, Y axis and live tooling to complete front and back side work in a single setup. Bar fed production handles bar stock up to 2.75 inches in diameter.

Vertical machining centers provide 3, 4 and 5 axis capability, with spindles up to 24,000 RPM. In process probing and robot automation support housings, manifolds, plates, and cast or forged parts that need several faces held to one datum.

The company offers design review, DFM feedback, Mastercam programming, fixture and tooling design, and assembly of sub assemblies and matched sets. Parts that fit within an eight inch cube can be evaluated for manufacturing. Typical lot sizes run from 10 to 2,000 pieces.

The company works with aluminum, stainless and precipitation hardening steels, alloy and carbon steels, tool steels, copper alloys, nickel and cobalt superalloys, titanium and engineering plastics. Inspection includes First Article Inspection Reports to AS9102, an automated CMM, vision inspection and a comprehensive gage library. Shipments include a Certificate of Conformance and material traceability.

The company says it reinvests in its floor every year, in machines, inspection, automation and software. It has three generations of family ownership. The site also says its workforce is 100 percent U.S. persons, holds ITAR registration, and that CMMC Level 2 is in preparation.
