SkyOS flight control automation and Skyryse One helicopter, El Segundo, California
About Skyryse
Skyryse is an aviation technology company founded in 2016 and headquartered in El Segundo, California. It develops hardware and software for flight control automation. Its core product is SkyOS, which the company describes as a universal operating system for flight that brings flight controls, automation and aircraft systems together in one software-defined architecture. SkyOS powers Skyryse One, the company's first aircraft, a production helicopter.
SkyOS
The site lists these capabilities of the system:
- Simplified flight controls: a four-axis control stick, customisable touchscreen displays, adaptive instrument displays, digital circuit breakers, weight and balance management and an integrated checklist
- Inherent stability and automated manoeuvres: the aircraft holds altitude, heading and speed without pilot input, with hover hold, swipe to start, swipe to pick up and set down, and flight plan guidance
- Automated zero visibility landing using real-time automation and sensor fusion
- Automated emergency management: system-initiated autorotation, emergency autoland, crew alerting, automatic power management and fault monitoring
- Optionally piloted capability, from a ground station or fully autonomous
- Envelope protection: low G hazard, hot start avoidance, overtorque and vortex ring state protection, a triply redundant flight-control system and IMC recovery
Skyryse says SkyOS applies to any aircraft or helicopter and is built on a portfolio of patents spanning flight controls, automation, aircraft systems and autonomous operations. The company credits the system with the first automated takeoff, hover, landing and engine-out landing of a helicopter, each controlled with the swipe of a finger.
